Is Weimaraner High Maintenance?
The Weimaraner is a very beautiful and highly intelligent canine with great characteristics such as hunting, athleticism, and fidelity. They are really energetic and fun animals, and they love to be with their owners and members of their human family, especially children.
However, the Weimaraner is not the right choice of dog for everyone as maintenance is quite high in terms of their daily needs compared to many other breeds. Each owner must take these aspects into account before acquiring a canine of this breed. It is for that reason that this type of dog is not often recommended for inexperienced dog owners.
Important Aspects of the Maintenance and Care of Weimaraner Dogs
1. Exercise and Entertainment
Weimaraner dogs should be kept entertained at all times, whether playing or exercising anywhere. These dogs of particular personalities need you to take charge.
Normally, this type of animal requires rigorous exercise, at least 1 or 2 hours a day of training, and distraction. However, suppose the athletic needs of this dog are ignored. In that case, it could start looking for other ways to entertain itself, such as chewing on shoes (or any other object), escaping from the yard or house, and digging in the ground, causing a disaster.
2. Feeding
The Weimaraner needs a balanced diet of vitamins and nutrients that works in conjunction with its daily exercise routine. As these dogs love to run and exercise every day, it is necessary to maintain a special diet through natural and healthy foods.
You must find a balance between the adequate protein requirements and the calories your pet needs. Weimaraners need to eat a lot of meat. It should consume at least 50 to 80 percent. It is the same with other ingredients such as oils and components that contain starch, such as potatoes, rice, and oats.
The amount of food you feed your dog is just as significant as the quality when it comes to a Weimaraner’s diet. This breed is at high risk for bloating, a condition where the stomach twists so severely that blood flow is disrupted (occurs in deep-chested dogs).
Although bloating can occur regardless of diet, feeding smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day instead of one or two large ones can reduce the likelihood of bloating.
3. Hygiene
We can consider that the hygiene of the Weimaraner is an exception in terms of its maintenance. Dogs of this breed have short, smooth fur, so they do not need much care and treatment. However, you should brush its coat at least twice a week to keep it free of dead hair and dirt.
As for dog baths, they need to be done regularly or, better yet, when necessary. That is important for your Weimaraner to have healthy skin and a shiny coat.
On the other hand, dental cleaning and nail trimming are essential for your Weimaraner, but at the same time, they are not considered high maintenance factors since it is something simple that you can do yourself at home.
