Can Dogs Drink Propel Water?

Most human drinks cannot be given to your dog due to ingredients that are unsafe for canine consumption, but bottled water is something far more natural. Some of these bottled waters include electrolytes and other added minerals, but are these safe for your dog to drink? Can dogs drink Propel water?

In most cases, the answer is no. Propel is an electrolyte water that contains electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Although there are certain circumstances in which a veterinarian may suggest you provide such a beverage to your canine companion, the average dog should not consume human-targeted electrolyte beverages due to the unsafe level of these chemicals for the canine body.

Get to Know Propel Better

Propel is water that is noted for being a great, sugar-free bottled water option that includes many of the essential electrolytes required for proper hydration in humans. Since it is sugar-free but also flavored, it additionally includes sucralose to sweeten the water alongside the natural flavors used.

Propel also provides the same amount of electrolytes found in Gatorade but without all of the added sugar. Propel is packaged in recyclable bottles, courtesy of the company’s goal to provide high-quality and environmentally friendly products. They also come in a variety of flavors without resorting to using unnatural chemicals or involving dyes to make the beverage appear to be certain flavors.

The Drawbacks of Propel for Dogs

In contrast to humans, dogs do not lose the same amount of electrolytes when sweating or panting after physical activity. However, they do still become dehydrated, but they function much differently from what we experience as human beings. In nearly all cases, fresh drinking water is perfectly sufficient for a dog to rehydrate.

Giving your pup an electrolyte drink may result in sodium ion poisoning, which can be a potentially fatal condition. Smaller dogs are the ones that are most at risk from this too, due to their size and reduced ability to process large amounts of electrolytes if they were to drink a significant amount of this type of water. Vomiting, dehydration, generalized weakness, diarrhea, and convulsions are all possible side effects.

Although Propel does not contain sugar, it does contain sucralose. This artificial sweetener is not toxic to canines like some of the other types commonly found in food and drinks, but it can still lead to diarrhea and digestive distress, so it’s best to avoid allowing your dog to have anything containing it whenever possible.

However, if your canine companion is suffering from diarrhea or another condition that may lead to severe dehydration, an electrolyte formula may be required. Always check with your veterinarian first before providing such to your pet. The need to deliver IV fluids to reestablish acid-base balance in the body may be necessary depending on the origin and severity of the condition, but sometimes a small amount of a beverage like Pedialyte may be sufficient.

All of this depends upon the cause of your dog’s dehydration, their age, breed, and any other factors that may be impacting their health. This is why it’s so important to consult your vet before trying to resolve any of these issues at home on your own.

Generally, dogs do not require additional electrolytes since they obtain all of the electrolytes they need from simply drinking water and consuming healthy, canine-appropriate foods. Most canine diets will have just what they need to keep their electrolyte levels balanced with no additional need for supplementation.

As a result, canines should only drink fresh, clean water to stay hydrated. Allowing your dog to drink Propel is not advised.

FAQs

Is it okay for dogs to drink anything other than water?

The short and simple answer is no. Water should be the main source of hydration for your dog. Always remember that our dogs’ bodies do not function in the same way that ours do, and as a result, they are unable to tolerate the same amounts of sugar, caffeine, and other components that we can. What may be a common or delicious treat for us can cause serious health concerns in our canine companions.

What kinds of drinks should dogs avoid?

Dogs must avoid the following drinks:

  • Beer & wine
  • Soda
  • Juice
  • Milk
  • Coffee & tea
  • Lemonade

Anything containing alcohol, caffeine, or high amounts of sugar can become fatal for dogs.

Is it true that sparkling water is harmful to dogs?

Somewhat. Sparkling water is carbonated, and in large volumes, this may be harmful to dogs even though it isn’t specifically toxic. If dogs are fed significant volumes of sparkling water, there is fear that the carbonation from this water would cause them to bloat. This may not be an issue if your dog only has a small amount, but it’s best to avoid posing any health risks to your pup whatsoever.

Is it okay to offer dogs strawberry water?

Although fruits such as strawberries are high in fiber and vitamin C, most beverages that are strawberry-flavored will generally have added sugar and other unsafe ingredients for your pup. However, if you make your strawberry-infused water at home with no additional chemicals or flavorings added, this should be perfectly safe for your fur baby to consume.
